Joseph Power Patriot

This page is dedicated to the memory of Joseph Power, Peace Commissioner,
of 29 St. Patrick's Terrace, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, Ireland, 1887 - 1952.

​He was born in Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A., reared in Dualla, Cashel, lived most of his life in Clonmel and was buried in Moycarkey, Thurles.

  • Born in Unity Hospital, Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A., in 1887, Joseph Power was sent to be reared in Raheen, Dualla, Cashel in 1894. He became a tailor in Clinton's {then owned by a Mr. Hanna} in Parnell Street, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, later working in St. Luke's Hospital.
    He married Mary Quinlan of Graigue, Moycarkey in 1912. Joseph and Mary had 8 children: Michael, May, Thomas, Tony, Davy, Paddy and Joan. Michael and Thomas died in the big flu pandemic in 1918. The Power Family lived in 50 Cashel Road, Clonmel for many years, later moving to 29 St. Patrick's Terrace.
    In the 1918 General election, he was one of the committee that helped Pierce McCann , also of Raheen, Dualla, get elected as East Tipperary's first Sinn Féin M.P.
    ​Joseph became active in the Irish Volunteers/Irish Republican Army 3rd Brigade in 1917, serving as intelligence scout and a facilitator of I.R.A volunteers looking for safe houses in the War of Independence {1919-1921}.
    He was awarded the Cogadh na Saoirse {War of Independence} medal. Please see in documentary evidence below, the application for the medal, including in his own words and confirmation of the awarding of same in 1948.
    During the War of Independence, in 1920, Joseph Power served as a co-opted Councillor on Clonmel Borough Council.
