Joan Shanahan {nee Power}
In Memory of Joan Shanahan, Clonmel: 1931 - 2014.
He was a a tailor in St. Luke's Hospital, who did his apprenticeship in Clinton's. Her Mother was Mary Quinlan from Graigue, Moycarkey.
Joan attended the Presentation Convent and went on to be a hairdresser in Mrs. Cahill’s in O’Connell Street. She later set up her own business.
On 20/1/1958 she married Phil Shanahan of Toomevara, the well known Tipperary All Ireland Hurler, in St. Mary's Church in Irishtown. She had three sons Philip, David and Brian.
With Phil, she also lived in Birr, Portlaoise, Dublin and Killenaule, before returning to Clonmel in 1991.
She was an avid reader, was an excellent cook and dressmaker, and was always the best host, in the Power tradition, when visitors arrived. She had a great sense of humour, despite all her pain – she said she was in the departure lounge some days before she passed!
She could only see the good in others and it was very rarely, she said a bad word about anyone. And to anyone who hoarded the money she said "there are no pockets in a shroud! If she was going out and worried about her appearance, she said she looked liked the "wreck of the Hesperus! “
